Dry Ridge Roofing

Why mortar on the ridge eventually lets go

Traditionally, the ridge tiles along the top of a roof and the tiles at the verges were bedded in sand and cement. Mortar does not move with the roof. Over years of frost, sun and wind it cracks, comes away in chunks and leaves the ridge tiles loose, which is a common reason for them lifting in a storm. A dry ridge system takes that weak point out of the roof.

Instead of mortar, each ridge tile is clipped or screwed down to a ridge batten, over a roll of breathable material that seals the joint against rain. Dry verge works the same way at the gable edge, with interlocking caps fixed to the ends of the tile battens. Nothing relies on bedding, so there is no mortar to repoint and far less to work loose in high wind.

Dry ridge is the right call when the mortar has failed along most of the ridge, when the roof is being re-tiled, or when you are tired of patching the same joints. The ridge roll also lets air escape from the top of the roof space, which helps with ventilation. We confirm the system suits your tiles before quoting, because not every older tile profile takes one.

See your roof from above before you decide

Most roof problems cannot be seen from the garden. Our drone survey gives you clear pictures of the tiles, ridge, valleys, chimney and guttering, so you can see the damage we are talking about and understand why the work is needed.

It is free and there is no obligation. If the roof is sound, we will tell you so. If it needs work, the images sit alongside your written quote, and they are useful if you are making an insurance claim for storm damage.

Pricing

What affects your dry ridge quote?

Every roof is different, so we price your job after looking at it, usually with a free drone inspection first. These are the things that make the biggest difference.

01

Length of ridge and verges

A single straight ridge on a terrace is quicker than a hipped roof, where the hips also need treating along their full length.

02

Tile profile

Systems are made to suit particular tile types. Older or unusual tiles can need a specific product, or replacement ridge tiles to match.

03

Condition of the ridge tiles

Sound ridge tiles can go back on. Cracked or mismatched ones need replacing, and matching older tiles can take some finding.

04

Scaffolding and access

The ridge is the highest part of the roof. Most jobs need scaffolding, and the height and layout of the house affect how much.

FAQs

Dry ridge questions answered

What is a dry ridge system?

It is a way of fixing ridge tiles without mortar. A batten runs along the ridge, a breathable roll seals the joint, and each tile is clipped or screwed down. Dry verge does the same job at the gable ends. The tiles are held mechanically, so they do not depend on bedding that cracks with age.

How do I know my ridge mortar has failed?

Common signs are cracked or missing mortar visible from the ground, pieces of sand and cement in the gutters or on the path, and ridge tiles that look out of line. Damp near the top of a bedroom ceiling can also point to the ridge. Our drone inspection shows the whole ridge close up, so you are not guessing.

Is dry ridge better than repointing?

Repointing renews the mortar and can be fine on a roof in otherwise good order, but the new mortar will eventually crack too. Dry ridge removes the mortar altogether, so there is less ongoing maintenance and the tiles are fixed down rather than resting in bedding. Where the ridge has failed, it is usually the more durable choice.

How long does it take, and what affects the price?

A straightforward ridge on a terraced or semi-detached house is often completed in a day once the scaffolding is up. Hipped roofs, long ridges, verges on both gables and any replacement ridge tiles add time and cost, as does the access needed. All of that is set out on your written quote.

How do I get a quote for dry ridge?

Book a free drone inspection and we will capture close-up images of your ridge, hips and verges, then go through them with you. A free, no-obligation written quote follows, with any guarantee details confirmed on it, so you can weigh it against any other option you are considering.
