Flat Roofs

A hard, jointless finish laminated onto your roof

GRP stands for glass reinforced plastic. On your roof it starts as a smooth new deck, onto which we lay glass fibre matting and wet it out with resin, rolling it until every fibre is saturated. The resin cures into a single rigid laminate with no laps or seams, and a pigmented top coat then goes over it to seal the surface and give the roof its finished colour.

We are approved Cure It GRP installers, and fibreglass is the system we tend to suggest for roofs with plenty of features or roofs you want to use. Because it is laminated in place, it forms neatly around rooflights, lanterns and awkward corners. With the right deck and finish it can also take regular foot traffic, so it can work for a balcony or a roof you step out onto from an upstairs room.

Fibreglass relies on good conditions as much as good materials. Resin needs dry weather and a suitable temperature to cure, so we plan the laminating around the forecast and keep the deck covered until it is ready. Preformed GRP trims are fixed at the edges and kerbs before the laminate goes on, giving clean lines at gutters, verges and walls, and a roof that looks tidy from the garden as well as from above.

See your roof from above before you decide

Most roof problems cannot be seen from the garden. Our drone survey gives you clear pictures of the tiles, ridge, valleys, chimney and guttering, so you can see the damage we are talking about and understand why the work is needed.

It is free and there is no obligation. If the roof is sound, we will tell you so. If it needs work, the images sit alongside your written quote, and they are useful if you are making an insurance claim for storm damage.

Pricing

What affects your fibreglass roof quote?

Every roof is different, so we price your job after looking at it, usually with a free drone inspection first. These are the things that make the biggest difference.

01

Roof size and layout

Bigger roofs need more matting, resin and time, and multiple levels or tight corners slow the laminating compared with a simple open area.

02

Walkable or standard finish

A balcony or terrace that will be used regularly needs a heavier specification than a roof that is only reached for maintenance.

03

Trims and features

Each lantern, rooflight, outlet and wall abutment needs trims or detailing, so the number of features affects the labour involved.

04

Decking and insulation

Replacing a rotten deck or adding a warm roof build beneath the laminate increases materials and changes how the edges and trims are set.

FAQs

Fibreglass roof questions answered

Is a fibreglass roof better than felt or rubber?

It depends on the roof. GRP cures into a hard, jointless surface that handles detail well and can be specified for foot traffic, so it suits balconies and complicated roofs. Felt is often more economical, and EPDM suits large, simple shapes. We look at how your roof is built and used, then recommend the system that fits, with the reasons explained.

Can I use a fibreglass roof as a balcony?

A GRP roof can be finished to take regular foot traffic, which makes it well suited to roofs you step out onto from a bedroom or landing. The deck beneath must be strong enough, and balconies usually need balustrades and the right approvals, which are separate matters. We will talk through what your project needs at the survey.

What weather do you need to lay GRP?

Resin needs dry conditions and a reasonable temperature to cure properly, so rain, heavy damp or a hard frost will hold up the laminating. We watch the forecast closely, keep the roof protected between stages and only lay when conditions are right. That can mean adjusting dates, but it avoids a laminate that never cures as it should.

How long does a fibreglass roof take to install?

A typical extension or dormer roof is usually stripped, decked, trimmed and laminated over a few days, with the top coat added once the laminate has cured. Larger roofs, balconies and roofs with many features take longer. Because the work depends on the weather, we give you an expected timescale on the quote and keep you updated if conditions change.

How do I find out what a GRP roof will cost?

Book a free, no-obligation drone inspection. It gives you a clear visual report of the existing roof, and we follow it with a free written quote covering the deck, trims, laminate, finish and guarantee details. Cost depends on the size and layout, whether the roof needs a walkable finish and the condition of the deck underneath.
