Fascias & Soffits

What sits behind your guttering matters more than it looks

Fascias are the boards fixed along the ends of your rafters, carrying the guttering and supporting the bottom row of tiles. Soffits close the gap underneath, and bargeboards finish the gable ends. On many Hull terraces and semis these are still painted timber, and once the paint fails the wood takes on water, softens and starts to pull away. We replace them with uPVC boards, and Freefoam products are among those we fit.

There are two ways to do this job and we will tell you which suits your house. Capping clads the old timber with a thin uPVC skin, which is quicker, but it only works if the wood underneath is sound. Capping over rot simply hides the problem while it carries on. Full replacement strips the old boards back to the rafter ends so we can see and repair what is there before the new boards go on.

Because the work happens at the eaves, it is also where we check the bottom courses of tiles, the sarking felt or membrane that should dress into the gutter, and the airflow into your loft. Ventilated soffits let air move through the roof space, which helps keep condensation down. Our drone inspection shows the condition of the whole roofline before you commit to anything.

See your roof from above before you decide

Most roof problems cannot be seen from the garden. Our drone survey gives you clear pictures of the tiles, ridge, valleys, chimney and guttering, so you can see the damage we are talking about and understand why the work is needed.

It is free and there is no obligation. If the roof is sound, we will tell you so. If it needs work, the images sit alongside your written quote, and they are useful if you are making an insurance claim for storm damage.

Pricing

What affects your fascia and soffit quote?

Every roof is different, so we price your job after looking at it, usually with a free drone inspection first. These are the things that make the biggest difference.

01

Length of roofline

A mid-terrace front is a short run. A detached house with gables, a garage and an extension can be several times the length.

02

Capping or full replacement

Capping takes less labour, while full replacement includes stripping, timber repairs and disposal. The state of the old wood decides which we can recommend.

03

Access and height

Bungalows can often be reached from ladders and towers. Three-storey houses, or eaves above a conservatory, may need scaffolding.

04

Finish and extras

White uPVC is the usual choice. Woodgrain or coloured finishes, decorative bargeboards, new guttering and extra ventilation all change the quote.

FAQs

Fascia and soffit questions answered

How do I know if my fascias need replacing?

Look for peeling paint, dark stains, boards that bow outwards or guttering that has started to dip. From the ground you will not always see the back of the board, which is where rot usually starts. Our free drone inspection photographs the whole roofline so you can see the condition of every board before deciding anything.

Is capping over my old fascias a bad idea?

Not always. If the timber is dry and solid, capping is a reasonable option and costs less. The trouble comes when capping is fitted over wood that is already soft, because the rot carries on hidden behind the plastic. We test the boards before quoting and will only suggest capping where the timber underneath can genuinely take it.

How long does a fascia and soffit job take?

A typical terraced or semi-detached house is usually a matter of days rather than weeks. It depends on how much timber repair turns up once the old boards are off and whether scaffolding is needed. We give you an expected timescale on the written quote and keep you updated if we find anything that changes it.

What affects the price of new fascias and soffits?

The main things are the total length of eaves and gables, whether we are capping or fully replacing, how much rafter repair is needed, access, and the finish you choose. Replacing guttering at the same time adds to the job but saves taking it down twice. Your written quote sets each part out clearly.

How do I get a quote for fascias and soffits?

Ask us for a free drone inspection. We fly the roofline, show you the footage and photos, and follow up with a free, no-obligation written quote. Any guarantee on the work is confirmed on that quotation, so you know exactly what is covered before you go ahead.
